Jupiter Release Notes
Version 85, Dec. 23, 2024
- Some changes to the call to the map API, to replace some deprecated methods.
- Larger default image bounds of 2560x1440. This will not affect saved projects, or saved default settings. If you want to use the new bounds on saved projects, change them manually under Images » General.
- Copyright update.
Version 84, Jun. 7, 2024
- Option to set the default bounds for theme images. This setting, on the Misc tab of the skin settings, is intended more as "future-proofing" than as a currently needed setting.
- Revised links to help pages.
Version 83, Feb. 11, 2024
- Option to include links to an external homepage and the album home on slide pages.
- Minor UI changes.
- Fix for a bug in the UI enabling for some title bar border options.
Version 82, Jan. 22, 2024
- Option to place the title bar logo above the navigation icons and title, rather then embedded with them. It can be positioned left, center, or right.
- Option to make the info page image a clickable link.
- Fix for a bug when using an uncropped theme image on an info page.
Version 81, Jan. 8, 2024
- Option for an uncropped theme image. A normal background theme image is always shown at the same height, but the sides are cropped on smaller displays. If you choose this new option, the entire width of the theme image is always visible on the web page, regardless of viewport size. To preserve the aspect ratio, of course, the image must get shorter as it gets narrower. The height of the navigation icons and page titles is checked upon page loading - if they "spill out" of the theme image on the device being used by the site visitor, they are moved below the theme image.
- Simplified calculation of the theme image crop mask.
- Option for a fixed-position banner removed.
- Removed some now-unnecessary code for deleting obsolete output files.
Version 80.1, Dec. 9, 2023
- Fix for an old navigation bug when using the pagination option to generate multiple index pages.
Version 80, Dec. 5, 2023
- The skin now uses a newly-introduced jAlbum core method to exclude unsupported objects. This is much more efficient than having the skin take care of the problem itself.
- The skin now uses a newly-introduced jAlbum feature to force the use of original GIF's for the slide images (so they don't lose their animation). This is much more efficient than having the skin take care of it.
- Some small CSS tweaks.
- Some internal code improvements.
- Removed some unreachable page code.
- Fix for a bug in the folder menu that sometimes produced a non-working link to an external homepage.
Version 79, Dec. 1, 2023
- Option to have the title bar link to an external home page displayed only on the top level of the album.
- Some UI changes.
- Some default settings changes.
- This is the last version that is compatible with jAlbum 29/33.2.
Version 78, Nov. 23, 2023
- Restored the option to have the title bar link to the info page appear only on the top level of the album.
- Minor UI changes.
Version 77, Nov. 7, 2023
- Extensively revised handling of navigation to an external home page, to the home page of the album, and to the info page. Each can now be represented by an icon in the title bar, or by an entry in the folder menu (the folder menu always includes a link to the home page of the album, since it is the root of the folder tree), or both. Links to each of them, if present in the folder menu, show the appropriate navigation icon.
- The depth of the folder menu is now limited. The user may choose the depth, up to a maximum of six levels.
- Simplified use of the "external" and "home" icons.
- Changes to the routines that exclude unsupported objects and force use of originals for GIF's, in order to accommodate changes in the jAlbum multi-maker.
- Some reorganization of settings panels.
Version 76, Oct. 29, 2023
- Option, when using the Custom style, to specify the colors of the folder menu - background, text, hover text.
- Slight modification to the appearance of the audio control bar.
- jQuery update.
Version 75, Oct. 25, 2023
- Option for a folder menu, accessible via a menu "hamburger" in the title bar.
- Simplified code for the metadata popup.
Version 74, Oct. 16, 2023
- Revised Google map scripting to remove some obsolete code, and to address some harmless but annoying console warning messages.
- Customized monolithic Floatbox script to accommodate some unusual skin requirements.
Version 73, Sep. 28, 2023
- UI changes to make better use of recent jAlbum core updates (custom skin icon, scrolling panels).
- More efficient routine for excluding unsupported objects. Unsupported objects are not included in the album, but they're no longer excluded in the Explore view. To avoid seeing the warning message each time you make the album, either delete the unsupported objects, or mark them as "excluded" manually. A list of the unsupported objects appears in the system console when the album is built.
- Internal code improvements (replaced an old code hack for metadata display with some proper Javascript).
Version 72, Sep. 3, 2023
- Option to use a relative URL for the favicon.
- UI changes to accommodate smaller laptops.
- Redirected help links.
Version 71, Aug. 29, 2023
- Option to render the theme image in grayscale (i.e., black and white).
- Improved feedback on the Make New and Make Old buttons in the individual image settings.
Version 70, Aug. 13, 2023
- Option to display metadata in a popup window, rather than as part of the caption text. This is the default setting, so review the setting if you're remaking an older project.
- jQuery update.
Version 69, Jun. 9, 2023
- There is now an option to have the skin treat solo web locations in folders differently. If this option is selected, and the skin encounters a folder that has only a single web location in it, and nothing else, it produces the usual folder thumbnail. But the folder thumbnail, if clicked, doesn't open the folder - instead, it goes directly to the target of the web location.
- Some thumbnail animation improvements.
Version 68, May 27, 2023
- If you want to display non-EXIF metadata, the custom metadata fields now accept "or" entries for the tag, using a pipe separator. If you enter, for example, Iptc.Creator | Iptc.By-line, it will return the first one it finds in the image's metadata.
- More concise metadata extraction coding.
Version 67, Apr. 25, 2023
- Small adjustment to the display of thumbnail captions.
- Forced creation of the output res directory, to avoid a rare jAlbum core bug.
- Updated version of jQuery.
Version 66, Mar. 26, 2023
- Default image bounds change.
- Changed help links to point to new hosting site for the user's manuals.
- Compiled to Java 14, to maintain some backward compatibility. The skin was using Java 8 for this purpose, but that will soon be deprecated.
Version 65, Mar. 8, 2023
- Revised colors in Forest style.
- Minor UI improvement in thumbnail surround contrast setting.
Version 64, Feb. 4, 2023
- Option to use a repeated texture image file as the theme image. Please read the user's manual entry about this option.
Version 63, Jan. 24, 2023
- Improved display of the theme image and title bar on phones.
- Changes to the metadata camera icon.
- Various CSS and code tweaks.
Version 62, Dec. 14, 2022
- Improved thumbnail hover behavior: smoother transitions when using a shifting border color, shifting box shadow, and/or grayscale effect, and proper response when hovering on "new" overlays.
Version 61, Dec. 10, 2022
- Some changes in default texts.
- Addition of a flag to correct some jAlbum core misbehavior regarding resource files.
Version 60, Nov. 17, 2022
- Option to have thumbnails appear in grayscale when they're hovered.
- Forced inclusion of photographic data if map support is chosen.
- Small increase in recommended image bounds.
Version 59, Oct. 15, 2022
- Removed some unreachable code.
- Code cleanup.
- Fix for a minor validation issue on info pages.
- Fix for a bug when telling the skin not to put HTML breaks in top info text.
Version 58, Oct. 5, 2022
- Google fonts are now copied to the album, so there are no calls to Google from the album page. The pages load faster, and it avoids GDPR problems.
- Improved thumbnail layout on phones.
- More robust handling of unusual file names for user-added title bar logo and info page images.
- More efficient caching of user-added files (i.e., those that are not album objects).
- Code cleanup.
- Updated version of jQuery.
- Converted from BeanShell to Groovy scripting.
- Fix for a bug that caused image metadata to be displayed on a Youtube slide page.
- Fix for an ancient bug involving a void map page variable.
Version 57, Aug. 29, 2022
- Option to use two different WOFF files in a project.
- Some minor default settings changes.
- This is the last version that is compatible with jAlbum 28.
Version 56, Aug. 24, 2022
- Option, when treating an image as a panorama, to specify whether the image is initially centered in the viewport, or starts with the scrollbar on the left side of the image.
- Fix for a small bug involving image preloading when using WEBP output.
Version 55, Aug. 3, 2022
- Option to identify individual images as panoramas. The maximum image width is modified from the project settings for image bounds. If the project image bounds are, for example, 2000 by 900 pixels, this image, when scaled, will be bounded by 50000 x 900 pixels. The slide page is responsive to the height of the viewport, but the visitor can scroll left and right to view the entire image. Upon page loading or resizing, the panoramic image is automatically scrolled to its center. On a phone, swiping left or right will pan across the image, rather than advancing to the next or previous slide.
Version 54, Jun. 20, 2022
- Multiple coding changes to prevent cross-skin contamination by a careless skin developer. Among other things, all of the CSS attributes have been renamed. When you load an older project, the skin will update any custom code you have included. When you first remake an album that was created with an older version of the skin, you must not choose Process only updated subdirectories. Doing so will produce a badly broken album.
- More thorough cleanup of unneeded output files from earlier versions or from experiments with my other skins.
- Other code cleanup.
Version 53, May 31, 2022
- More efficient routine for determining the length of an MP3 in the project.
- Some default settings changes.
- The skin's "hints" file now turns off the generation of JSON files, which are not used by this skin.
- Minor CSS tweaks.
Version 52, May 2, 2022
- The skin now supports audio clips on slide images. This version of the skin can be used with jAlbum 27, but to make use of audio clips, jAlbum 28 is required.
- Simplified, faster processing of title bar logos, info page images, and custom overlay images.
- Improved storage of non-album object files added to the project by the user (logo images, custom overlay images, WOFF files, info page images, background images).
- CSS and other code improvements.
- This is the last version that is compatible with jAlbum 27.
Version 51, Apr. 14, 2022
- You may now specify a maximum width for page titles and slide captions. Allowing the thumbnails and slide images to occupy most of the width of a large monitor is fine, but allowing titles and captions to spread that far makes them difficult to read.
- The maximum width of text placed above and below the thumbnails is now expressed as a pixel count, rather than as a percentage of the page width. Values in prior projects are converted upon loading.
- Changes to the skin's slide responsiveness script to improve the display of videos on small phones.
- The skin now warns you if you include Google maps, but don't provide an API key.
- The skin now disables jAlbum settings that may not be used or are irrelevant in this skin.
- Small change to the skin's hints.jap file.
Version 50, Mar. 25, 2022
- The skin now uses the jAlbum core routines to generate folder thumbnail images, rather than creating them itself. This is more robust, and considerably more efficient. The prior settings for folder thumbnail height and aspect ratio are no longer needed - you may set the folder thumbnail dimensions directly, under Settings » Images » General » Image Bounds » Folders. When older projects are loaded, the skin calculates the correct setting for these bounds. When an older project is made again with this version, the now-unneeded skin-generated thumbnails are removed from the output.
- Option to use a semi-transparent overlay on folder thumbnails.
- A small adjustment to the on-image navigation.
- Some minor CSS cleanup.
Version 49, Feb. 24, 2022
- Simplified credits line, without jAlbum and skin version numbers - site visitors don't care about versions. If you need to know what version you used to create an album, look at the page code - detailed information is present in a <meta> tag in the <head> section.
- Simplified font stacks.
- This is the last version that is compatible with jAlbum 25/26.
Version 48, Feb. 2, 2022
- If you have chosen to put a surrounding box around the thumbnails, you may now specify a border radius for those boxes, independent of any radius applied to the thumbnail images themselves.
- Some changes in maximum values for borders, shadows, and radii.
- Fix for a bug in the application of a border radius to theme images.
Version 47, Jan. 24, 2022
- Option to restrict display of the credit links to the top level of the album, if they're included.
- Option to include ALT attributes on thumbnail and slide images, for search engines. If this option is chosen, an entered title for a folder or image is used as the ALT attribute. If no title has been entered, the file name is used. If this option it not chosen, the ALT attribute is still present (it's required for HTML validation), but is empty.
- Minor code cleanup.
Version 46, Dec. 18, 2021
- Increased maximum page width, to accommodate large monitors.
- Default page width, thumbnail bounds, and image bounds increased.
- The bundled ConstrainRatioFilter class has been removed, in favor of the version distributed with the jAlbum core.
Version 45, Dec. 5, 2021
- You may now specify the desired aspect ratio (width divided by height) for displaying each PDF in a project. Values less than 1.0, like 0.8, sometimes work best for material that is shown on portrait-mode pages. Values greater than 1.0 work best for scanned material that is in landscape mode.
Version 44, Sep. 14, 2021
- Simplified handling of credits line.
Version 43, Sep. 3, 2021
- Switched to newer form of CSS rgb specification.
- Better cleanup of unused files for Google maps.
- More selective CSS generation.
- Some CSS corrections.

- Fix for a bug that was preventing the display of folder-specific theme images in some situations.
Version 41, Aug. 6, 2021
- Thumbnail captions are now line-clamped by default, to a maximum of two lines of title and two lines of comment. The user can override this. On mobile devices, the line-clamping is forced.
- Extensively revised Custom style options, along with some color corrections in preset styles.
- Reworked title bar coding.
- The custom thumbnail overlay now accepts SVG files, the maximum size has been increased, and a resizing bug has been fixed.
- A single thumbnail surround setting now applies to both folder and image thumbnails.
- Option to float thumbnails, i.e., to place the thumbnail caption to the side of the thumbnail, has been removed. Users of this option should use the Mercury skin, instead.
- The padding between a thumbnail image and its border (if any) is now always transparent. Solid colors can be applied with custom CSS.
- Default image bounds increased.
- Several efficiency improvements.
- Some code cleanup.
Version 40, Jul. 22, 2021

- Revised video and audio thumbnail overlays, and a new web location thumbnail overlay.

- Some default settings changes.
Version 39, Jul. 14, 2021
- Revised custom cursors for previous/next hover on slide images, for both fat and thin icon styles.

The first time you re-make an existing album, it will create all new folder thumbnails. On subsequent album builds, they will be regenerated only if necessary.
Version 33, Mar. 28, 2021
- Option to make the slide pages responsive only to the image, allowing lengthy caption material to trigger a vertical scrollbar if necessary. This can be applied at the album level or at the individual folder or image level.
- Chained directories enabled. The jAlbum core has been modified to confine the chaining to sibling directories, so the navigation is no longer hopelessly confusing.
- Updated jQuery.
- Fixed a bad help link.
Version 32, Mar. 24, 2021

Version 22, Jul. 22, 2020

- The small audio overlay icon has been replaced by a larger, centered, semi-transparent overlay. This can be disabled.
- The navigation for returning to the thumbnail page from a slide image now uses the "up" icon, rather than the "index" icon. The "index" icon is used only for returning from an info page.

- New styles, Chocolate and Smoke.
- Some adjustments to preset style colors.
- Some changes to default settings.
Version 13.1, Apr. 12, 2020
- Fixes for several related bugs in thumbnail spacing and captioning.
Version 13, Apr. 10, 2020
- Option to have metadata in a slide caption dimmed until the site visitor mouse-hovers on it.
- All pages produced by the skin now include an HTML lang attribute. It's helpful for search engines, for browser translations, and in some cases for choosing correct typography. It defaults to the language you have chosen for jAlbum, but you may choose another. See the Misc settings tab. If the language code for the predominant language in your album is not in the list, you may enter any of the standard codes manually.
- Better cleanup of leftover output files.
- Several important bug fixes.
Version 12, Mar. 29, 2020
- Option to place the folder thumbnails after the image thumbnails, rather than before.
- Some changes to settings limits.
Version 11, Mar. 20, 2020
- Instead of calculating the maximum width of the thumbnail table based on image bounds, borders, and column counts, the skin now provides a simple "Max table width" setting. Since the thumbnail table is responsive to the width of the viewport, wrapping thumbnails as needed, using column counts made no sense. When opening an older project, the skin tries to approximate the setting for the width of the thumbnail table. The result will be close, rather than exact, so review the results when re-making the album.
- Simplified handling of non-banner style theme images. Because of internal changes, the apparent size of theme images in older projects will change slightly, so review the results when re-making the album.
- Because the skin is no longer using the cols and rows settings on the Pages tab in jAlbum, those fields are disabled.
- It is still possible to generate multiple index pages (index.html, index2.html, index3.html, and so on). Instead of using cols and rows, there is now a skin setting for Max objects per page. When opening an older project, this setting is automatically set to the correct value. If the existing project specified 6 columns and 4 rows, for example, the Max objects per page is set to 24.
- Option to float the thumbnails, with their captions appearing to the side of each image. Thumbnails can be floated left or right, caption width and alignment can be selected, and a colored thumbnail surround may be chosen. On a small display the float is removed and the captions are centered below the thumbnails.
- Some default settings changes.
- A fix for a missing tooltip.
Version 10, Mar. 1, 2020
- The skin now accepts YouTube links in the simple "share" form that YouTube provides: for example, https://youtu.be/Bj-7LxpF9dA. The more complicated "embed" forms of the URL are still accepted, as well.
- Adjusted threshold for appearance of the "top of page" icon.
- More selective timestamping of output files.
- Chained directories are now automatically disabled. There are too many unsolved problems with this option, and they cause albums with "page not found" errors.
Version 9, Feb. 15, 2020
- Improved positioning of navigation icons on slide pages, now set to be roughly the same spread as on the thumbnail page.
- Improved positioning of globe and download icons on slide pages, and close-globe icon on map pages.
- Corrected handling of image display limits when choosing Link to originals or Use original, both with and without specifying HiDPI images. The skin can be used with jAlbum 17 or better, but for making albums with original images coupled with HiDPI images, jAlbum 19.3.2 or better is required.
- Corrected handling of video, audio, YouTube, Vimeo, and PDF display limits when choosing Link to originals or Use original.
- Adjustments to the map display layout.
- Background color for the "new" overlay changed from an alpha channel color to a regular color. If your project was using an alpha channel (semi-transparent) color for this, you might need to change the color when making the album for the first time with this version of the skin. You can also provide a semi-transparent color by using the skin's Code » CSS setting panel.
- Background color for the image padding when using the Custom style changed from an alpha channel color to a regular color. If your project was using an alpha channel (semi-transparent) color for this, you might need to change the color when making the album for the first time with this version of the skin. You can also provide a semi-transparent color by using the skin's Code » CSS setting panel. If your project was using the default setting of transparent image padding, or was using a solid color, no adjustment is necessary.
- Thumbstrip display on slide pages removed when viewing on a smartphone.
- Option to remove the metadata display on slide pages when viewing on a smartphone.
- Simplified packaging of Javascript files.
- Default image bounds changed.
- A fix for an error in the slide page responsiveness when a thumbstrip is being shown.

Version 8.1, Jan. 31, 2020
- Fix for a slide page size error when displaying an audio file without a poster image.
Version 8, Jan. 18, 2020
- Swipe detection removed from info page. This produced only a slight benefit for mobile visitors, while interfering with other functionality on the page.
- Improved handling of links in user-provided titles, comments, etc.
- If the skin is used to create an "album of albums," it doesn't generate or load unneeded image-handling scripts and icons.
- Some code cleanup for more efficient album creation and easier maintenance.
Version 7, Dec. 21, 2019
- When displaying maps, option to enable or disable the Google street view, which is billed at twice the rate of other map views.
- Option to autoplay videos removed. This is now blocked by all major browsers.
- Updated TouchSwipe script.
Version 6, Nov. 14, 2019
- Option to loop slides. If selected, hitting "next" on the last slide returns to the first slide, and vice-versa.
- Swipe detection removed from slide pages for videos. This worked only in some browsers on some platforms, and caused usability problems in others.
- Color gradients on the page body restored on mobile devices. This was removed in version 4 because of problems with Chrome for Android. Chrome 80 fixes the bug.
- Meta "robots" choices on the Misc tab clarified to remove ambiguity.
- Some changes to the settings tab layouts.
Version 5, Nov. 1, 2019
- An updated version of the jAlbum ConstrainRatioFilter.
- Default setting for thumbnail constrain aspect ratio set to true.
- Modified internal handling of the values for the ConstrainRatioFilter, so they can be targeted with user variables.
Version 4, Sep. 17, 2019
- Improved handling of title bar logo images.
- Option to autoplay audio files removed. All browsers now block this.
- Color gradients on the page body misbehave badly in some mobile browsers, including Chrome, so the skin now removes the gradient on small displays.
- If a GIF file is included in the album project, the original file is used for the slide page, regardless of jAlbum settings. This preserves GIF animations.
- Better positioning of globe and download icons on small displays.
- Some corrected small display breakpoints.
- Spell-checking added to selected input fields (requires jAlbum 18.5 or better).
- Some default settings changes.
Version 3, Sep. 3, 2019
- Reworked positioning of thumbnail captions.
- A fix for unwanted thumbnail spacing doubling.
- A fix for unwanted border doubling when using zero thumbnail spacing.
- Some pre-processing eliminated and replaced with dynamic layout adjustments upon album viewing.
- Simplified options for inclusion of a title bar logo image, and to make it a link to the album home or to an external site.
- Option to include the title bar logo on an info page.
- Corrected treatment of a title bar logo image on small displays.
- A warning popup is provided if you choose a theme image height that may be too short for the title bar contents (title, description, logo).
- Minor code cleanup.
- This is the last version that is compatible with jAlbum 15/16.
Version 2, Aug. 20, 2019
- Improvements to layout when not using fixed shape thumbnails.
- Added a Dark style.
- Changed About tab link to release notes.
- A warning popup is provided if you try to use jAlbum widgets, which are not supported in this skin.
- Some resource scripts combined for faster page loading.
- Minor bug fixes and code cleanup.
Version 1.1, Aug. 9, 2019
- A fix for the responsiveness script on map displays.
Version 1, Aug. 9, 2019
- Initial release.
- This skin is a fork from the Gromit skin.
- A variety of problematic features in Gromit have been left behind, including breadcrumb trails, link buttons, side- and top-mounted captions, body background images (other than simple texture graphics), multiple responsiveness modes, and widget support. Most other Gromit features are still present, though some options have been simplified.
- Support for PDF's is much better than is the case in Gromit (though it does not work in local preview - a PDF page can be viewed only from a server). At the same time, support for other web-page-unfriendly objects (Word documents, zip files, and so on) has been removed.
- The slide responsiveness script has been extensively reworked, to make better use of the limited display space on smartphones.
- The styles from Gromit have been added to, heavily revised, and in some cases removed.
